1태초에 '말씀'이 계셨다. 그 '말씀'은 하나님과 함께 계셨다. 그 '말씀'은 하나님이셨다.

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2He was with God in the beginning.

3모든 것이 그로 말미암아 창조되었으니, 그가 없이 창조된 것은 하나도 없다. 창조된 것은

3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

4그에게서 생명을 얻었으니, 그 생명은 사람의 빛이었다.

4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

5그 빛이 어둠 속에서 비치니, 어둠이 그 빛을 이기지 못하였다.

5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

6하나님께서 보내신 사람이 있었다. 그 이름은 요한이었다.

6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.

7그 사람은 그 빛을 증언하러 왔으니, 자기를 통하여 모든 사람을 믿게 하려는 것이었다.

7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.

8그 사람은 빛이 아니었다. 그는 그 빛을 증언하러 왔을 따름이다.

8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9참 빛이 있었다. 그 빛이 세상에 와서 모든 사람을 비추고 있다.

9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

10그는 세상에 계셨다. 세상이 그로 말미암아 생겨났는데도, 세상은 그를 알아보지 못하였다.

10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

11그가 자기 땅에 오셨으나, 그의 백성은 그를 맞아들이지 않았다.

11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

12그러나 그를 맞아들인 사람들, 곧 그 이름을 믿는 사람들에게는, 하나님의 자녀가 되는 특권을 주셨다.

12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-

13이들은 혈통에서나, 육정에서나, 사람의 뜻에서 나지 아니하고, 하나님에게서 났다.

13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

14그 말씀은 육신이 되어 우리 가운데 사셨다. 우리는 그의 영광을 보았다. 그것은 아버지께서 주신, 외아들의 영광이었다. 그는 은혜와 진리가 충만하였다.

14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15(요한은 그에 대하여 증언하여 외쳤다. "이분이 내가 말씀드린 바로 그분입니다. 내 뒤에 오시는 분이 나보다 앞서신 분이라고 말씀드린 것은, 이분을 두고 말한 것입니다. 그분은 사실 나보다 먼저 계신 분이기 때문입니다.")

15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' "

16우리는 모두 그의 충만함에서 선물을 받되, 은혜에 은혜를 더하여 받았다.

16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.

17율법은 모세를 통하여 받았고, 은혜와 진리는 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 생겨났다.

17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

18일찍이, 하나님을 본 사람은 아무도 없다. 아버지의 품속에 계신 외아들이신 하나님께서 하나님을 알려주셨다.

18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

19유대 사람들이 예루살렘에서 제사장들과 레위 지파 사람들을 [요한에게] 보내어서 "당신은 누구요?" 하고 물어 보게 하였다. 그 때에 요한의 증언은 이러하였다.

19Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.

20그는 거절하지 않고 고백하였다. "나는 그리스도가 아니오" 하고 그는 고백하였다.

20He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, 'I am not the Christ.'

21그들이 다시 요한에게 물었다. "그러면, 당신은 누구란 말이오? 엘리야요?" 요한은 "아니오" 하고 대답하였다. "당신은 그 예언자요?" 하고 그들이 물으니, 요한은 "아니오" 하고 대답하였다.

21They asked him, 'Then who are you? Are you Elijah?' He said, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'

22그래서 그들이 말하였다. "그러면, 당신은 누구란 말이오? 우리를 보낸 사람들에게 대답할 말을 좀 해주시오. 당신은 자신을 무엇이라고 말하시오?"

22Finally they said, 'Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?'

23요한이 대답하였다. "예언자 이사야가 말한 대로, 나는 '광야에서 외치는 이의 소리'요. '너희는 주님의 길을 곧게 하여라' 하고 말이오."

23John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' "

24그들은 바리새파 사람들이 보낸 사람들이었다.

24Now some Pharisees who had been sent

25그들이 또 요한에게 물었다. "당신이 그리스도도 아니고, 엘리야도 아니고, 그 예언자도 아니면, 어찌하여 세례를 주시오?"

25questioned him, 'Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?'

26요한이 대답하였다. "나는 물로 세례를 주오. 그런데 여러분 가운데 여러분이 알지 못하는 이가 한 분 서 계시오.

26'I baptize with water,' John replied, 'but among you stands one you do not know.

27그는 내 뒤에 오시는 분이지만, [나는] 그분의 신발 끈을 풀 만한 자격도 없소."

27He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.'

28이것은 요한이 세례를 주던 요단 강 건너편 베다니에서 일어난 일이다.

28This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29다음 날 요한은 예수께서 자기에게 오시는 것을 보고 말하였다. "보시오, 세상 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린 양입니다.

29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, 'Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

30내가 전에 말하기를 '내 뒤에 한 분이 오실 터인데, 그분은 나보다 먼저 계시기에, 나보다 앞서신 분입니다' 한 적이 있습니다. 그것은 이분을 두고 한 말입니다.

30This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'

31나도 이분을 알지 못하였습니다. 내가 와서 물로 세례를 주는 것은, 이분을 이스라엘에게 알리려고 하는 것입니다."

31I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.'

32요한이 또 증언하여 말하였다. "나는 성령이 비둘기같이 하늘에서 내려와서 이분 위에 머무는 것을 보았습니다.

32Then John gave this testimony: 'I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.

33나도 이분을 몰랐습니다. 그러나 나를 보내어 물로 세례를 주게 하신 분이 나에게 말씀하시기를, '성령이 어떤 사람 위에 내려와서 머무는 것을 보거든, 그가 바로 성령으로 세례를 주시는 분임을 알아라' 하셨습니다.

33I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'

34그런데 나는 그것을 보았습니다. 그래서 나는, 이분이 하나님의 아들이라고 증언하였습니다."

34I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.'

35다음 날 요한이 다시 자기 제자 두 사람과 같이 서 있다가,

35The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.

36예수께서 지나가시는 것을 보고서, "보아라, 하나님의 어린 양이다" 하고 말하였다.

36When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, 'Look, the Lamb of God!'

37그 두 제자는 요한이 하는 말을 듣고, 예수를 따라갔다.

37When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.

38예수께서 돌아서서, 그들이 따라오는 것을 보시고 물으셨다. "너희는 무엇을 찾고 있느냐?" 그들은 "랍비님, 어디에 묵고 계십니까?" 하고 말하였다. ('랍비'는 '선생님'이라는 말이다.)

38Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, 'What do you want?' They said, 'Rabbi' (which means Teacher), 'where are you staying?'

39예수께서 그들에게 대답하셨다. "와서 보아라." 그들이 따라가서, 예수께서 묵고 계시는 곳을 보고, 그 날을 그와 함께 지냈다. 때는 오후 네 시 쯤이었다.

39'Come,' he replied, 'and you will see.' So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour.

40요한의 말을 듣고 예수를 따라간 두 사람 가운데 한 사람은, 시몬 베드로와 형제간인 안드레였다.

40Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.

41이 사람은 먼저 자기 형 시몬을 만나서 말하였다. "우리가 메시아를 만났소." ('메시아'는 '그리스도'라는 말이다.)

41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, 'We have found the Messiah' (that is, the Christ).

42그런 다음에 시몬을 예수께로 데리고 왔다. 예수께서 그를 보시고 말씀하셨다. "너는 요한의 아들 시몬이로구나. 앞으로는 너를 게바라고 부르겠다." ('게바'는 '베드로' 곧 '바위'라는 말이다.)

42And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas' (which, when translated, is Peter).

43다음 날 예수께서 갈릴리로 떠나려고 하셨다. 그 때에 빌립을 만나서 말씀하셨다. "나를 따라오너라."

43The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, 'Follow me.'

44빌립은 벳새다 출신으로, 안드레와 베드로와 한 고향 사람이었다.

44Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.

45빌립이 나다나엘을 만나서 말하였다. "모세가 율법책에 기록하였고, 또 예언자들이 기록한 그분을 우리가 만났습니다. 그분은 나사렛 출신으로, 요셉의 아들 예수입니다."

45Philip found Nathanael and told him, 'We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote-Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.'

46나다나엘이 그에게 말하였다. "나사렛에서 무슨 선한 것이 나올 수 있겠소?" 빌립이 그에게 말하였다. "와서 보시오."

46'Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?' Nathanael asked. 'Come and see,' said Philip.

47예수께서 나다나엘이 자기에게로 오는 것을 보시고, 그를 두고 말씀하셨다. "보아라, 저 사람이야말로 참으로 이스라엘 사람이다. 그에게는 거짓이 없다."

47When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, 'Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false.'

48나다나엘이 예수께 물었다. "어떻게 나를 아십니까?" 예수께서 대답하셨다. "빌립이 너를 부르기 전에, 네가 무화과나무 아래에 있는 것을 내가 보았다."

48'How do you know me?' Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, 'I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.'

49나다나엘이 말하였다. "선생님, 선생님은 하나님의 아들이시요, 이스라엘의 왕이십니다."

49Then Nathanael declared, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.'

50예수께서 그에게 말씀하셨다. "네가 무화과나무 아래 있을 때에 내가 너를 보았다고 해서 믿느냐? 이것보다 더 큰 일을 네가 볼 것이다."

50Jesus said, 'You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that.'

51예수께서 그에게 또 말씀하셨다. "내가 진정으로 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 너희는, 하늘이 열리고 하나님의 천사들이 인자 위에 오르락내리락하는 것을 보게 될 것이다."

51He then added, 'I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.'
