1그러면 우리가 무엇이라고 말을 해야 하겠습니까? 은혜를 더하게 하려고, 여전히 죄 가운데 머물러 있어야 하겠습니까?

1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?

2그럴 수 없습니다. 우리는 죄에는 죽은 사람인데, 어떻게 죄 가운데서 그대로 살 수 있겠습니까?

2By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?

3세례를 받아 그리스도 예수와 하나가 된 우리는 모두 세례를 받을 때에 그와 함께 죽었다는 것을 여러분은 알지 못합니까?

3Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

4그러므로 우리는 세례를 통하여 그의 죽으심과 연합함으로써 그와 함께 묻혔던 것입니다. 그것은, 그리스도께서 아버지의 영광으로 말미암아 죽은 사람들 가운데서 살아나신 것과 같이, 우리도 또한 새 생명 안에서 살아가기 위함입니다.

4We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

5우리가 그의 죽으심과 같은 죽음을 죽어서 그와 연합하는 사람이 되었으면, 우리는 부활에 있어서도 또한 그와 연합하는 사람이 될 것입니다.

5If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.

6우리의 옛사람이 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 달려 죽은 것은, 죄의 몸을 멸하여서, 우리가 다시는 죄의 노예가 되지 않게 하려는 것임을 우리는 압니다.

6For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin-

7죽은 사람은 이미 죄의 세력에서 해방되었습니다.

7because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

8우리가 그리스도와 함께 죽었으면, 그와 함께 우리도 또한 살아날 것임을 믿습니다.

8Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

9우리가 알기로, 그리스도께서는 죽은 사람들 가운데서 살아나셔서, 다시는 죽지 않으시며, 다시는 죽음이 그를 지배하지 못합니다.

9For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.

10그리스도께서 죽으신 죽음은 죄에 대해서 단번에 죽으신 것이요, 그분이 사시는 삶은 하나님을 위하여 사시는 것입니다.

10The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

11이와 같이 여러분도, 죄에 대해서는 죽은 사람이요, 하나님을 위해서는 그리스도 예수 안에서 살고 있는 사람이라는 것을 알아야 합니다.

11In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12그러므로 여러분은 죄가 여러분의 죽을 몸을 지배하지 못하게 해서, 여러분이 몸의 정욕에 굴복하는 일이 없도록 하십시오.

12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.

13그러므로 여러분은 여러분의 지체를 죄에 내맡겨서 불의의 연장이 되게 하지 마십시오. 오히려 여러분은 죽은 사람들 가운데서 살아난 사람답게, 여러분을 하나님께 바치고, 여러분의 지체를 의의 연장으로 하나님께 바치십시오.

13Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.

14여러분은 율법 아래 있지 않고, 은혜 아래 있으므로, 죄가 여러분을 다스릴 수 없을 것입니다.

14For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

15그러면 어떻게 해야 하겠습니까? 우리가 율법 아래 있지 않고, 은혜 아래에 있다고 해서, 마음 놓고 죄를 짓자는 말입니까? 그럴 수 없습니다.

15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!

16여러분이 아무에게나 자기를 종으로 내맡겨서 복종하게 하면, 여러분은, 여러분이 복종하는 그 사람의 종이 되는 것임을 알지 못합니까? 여러분은 죄의 종이 되어 죽음에 이르거나, 아니면 순종의 종이 되어 의에 이르거나, 하는 것입니다.

16Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey-whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

17그러나 하나님께 감사하는 것은, 여러분이 전에는 죄의 종이었으나, 이제 여러분은 전해 받은 교훈의 본에 마음으로부터 순종함으로써,

17But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted.

18죄에서 해방을 받아서 의의 종이 된 것입니다.

18You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

19여러분의 이해력이 미약하므로, 내가 사람의 방식으로 말하겠습니다. 여러분이 전에는 자기 지체를 더러움과 불법의 종으로 내맡겨서 불법에 빠져 있었지만, 이제는 여러분의 지체를 의의 종으로 바쳐서 거룩함에 이르도록 하십시오.

19I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness.

20여러분이 죄의 종일 때에는 의에 얽매이지 않았습니다.

20When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness.

21여러분은 그 때에 무슨 열매를 거두었습니까? 이제 와서 여러분이 그러한 생활을 부끄러워하지마는, 그러한 생활의 마지막은 죽음입니다.

21What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!

22이제 여러분은 죄에서 해방을 받고, 하나님의 종이 되어서, 거룩함에 이르는 삶의 열매를 맺고 있습니다. 그 마지막은 영원한 생명입니다.

22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.

23죄의 삯은 죽음이요, 하나님의 선물은 우리 주 예수 그리스도 안에서 누리는 영원한 생명입니다.

23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
