1주님께서 계속되는 가뭄을 두고 예레미야에게 말씀하셨다.

1This is the word of the LORD to Jeremiah concerning the drought:

2"유다가 슬피 울고, 성읍마다 백성이 기력을 잃고, 땅바닥에 쓰러져 탄식하며, 울부짖는 소리가 예루살렘에서 치솟는다.

2'Judah mourns, her cities languish; they wail for the land, and a cry goes up from Jerusalem.

3귀족들이 물을 구하려고 종들을 보내지만, 우물에 가도 물이 없어서 종들은 빈 그릇만 가지고 돌아온다. 종들이 애태우며 어찌할 바를 모른다.

3The nobles send their servants for water; they go to the cisterns but find no water. They return with their jars unfilled; dismayed and despairing, they cover their heads.

4온 땅에 비가 내리지 않아서 땅이 갈라지니, 마음 상한 농부도 애태우며 어찌할 바를 모른다.

4The ground is cracked because there is no rain in the land; the farmers are dismayed and cover their heads.

5들녘의 암사슴도 연한 풀이 없어서, 갓낳은 새끼까지 내버린다.

5Even the doe in the field deserts her newborn fawn because there is no grass.

6들나귀도 언덕 위에 서서 여우처럼 헐떡이고, 뜯어먹을 풀이 없어서 그 눈이 흐려진다."

6Wild donkeys stand on the barren heights and pant like jackals; their eyesight fails for lack of pasture.'

7"주님, 비록 우리의 죄악이 우리를 고발하더라도, 주님의 이름을 생각하셔서 선처해 주십시오. 우리는 수없이 반역해서, 주님께 죄를 지었습니다.

7Although our sins testify against us, O LORD, do something for the sake of your name. For our backsliding is great; we have sinned against you.

8주님은 이스라엘의 희망이십니다. 이스라엘이 환난을 당할 때에 구하여 주시는 분이십니다. 그런데 어찌하여 이 땅에서 나그네처럼 행하시고, 하룻밤을 묵으러 들른 행인처럼 행하십니까?

8O Hope of Israel, its Savior in times of distress, why are you like a stranger in the land, like a traveler who stays only a night?

9어찌하여, 놀라서 어쩔 줄을 모르는 사람처럼 되시고, 구해 줄 힘을 잃은 용사처럼 되셨습니까? 주님, 그래도 주님은 우리들 한가운데에 계시고, 우리는 주님의 이름으로 불리는 백성이 아닙니까? 우리를 그냥 버려 두지 마십시오."

9Why are you like a man taken by surprise, like a warrior powerless to save? You are among us, O LORD, and we bear your name; do not forsake us!

10주님께서 이 백성을 두고 이렇게 말씀하신다. "그들은 이리저리 방황하기를 좋아하고, 어디 한 곳에 가만히 서 있지를 못한다. 그러므로 나 주가 그들을 좋아하지 않으니, 이제 그들의 죄를 기억하고, 그들의 죄악을 징벌하겠다."

10This is what the LORD says about this people: 'They greatly love to wander; they do not restrain their feet. So the LORD does not accept them; he will now remember their wickedness and punish them for their sins.'

11주님께서 또 나에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 이 백성에게 은총을 베풀어 달라고 나에게 기도하지 말아라.

11Then the LORD said to me, 'Do not pray for the well-being of this people.

12그들이 금식을 하여도, 나는 그들의 호소를 들어주지 않겠다. 또 그들이 번제물과 곡식제물을 바쳐도, 나는 그것을 받지 않겠다. 나는 오히려 칼과 기근과 염병으로 그들을 전멸시켜 버리겠다."

12Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry; though they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will destroy them with the sword, famine and plague.'

13그래서 내가 아뢰었다. "그렇지만 주 하나님, 저 예언자들이 이 백성에게 주님의 말씀이라고 하면서 '전쟁이 일어나지 않는다. 기근이 오지 않는다. 오히려 주님께서 이 곳에서 너희에게 확실한 평화를 주신다' 합니다."

13But I said, "Ah, Sovereign LORD, the prophets keep telling them, 'You will not see the sword or suffer famine. Indeed, I will give you lasting peace in this place.' "

14주님께서 나에게 말씀하셨다. "그 예언자들은 내 이름으로 거짓 예언을 하고 있다. 나는 그들을 예언자로 보내지도 않았고, 그들에게 명하지도 않았고, 그들에게 말하지도 않았다. 그들이 이 백성에게 예언하는 것은, 거짓된 환상과 허황된 점괘와 그들의 마음에서 꾸며낸 거짓말이다."

14Then the LORD said to me, 'The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries and the delusions of their own minds.

15주님께서 그 예언자들을 두고 이렇게 말씀하신다. "그들은 내가 보내지도 않았는데, 내 이름으로 거짓 예언을 하였다. '이 땅에는 전쟁과 기근이 없을 것이다' 하고 말한 예언자들은 전쟁과 기근으로 죽을 것이다.

15Therefore, this is what the LORD says about the prophets who are prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying, 'No sword or famine will touch this land.' Those same prophets will perish by sword and famine.

16그 예언을 들은 이 백성도, 기근과 전쟁에 시달리다가 죽어서, 예루살렘 거리에 내던져질 것이며, 그들을 묻어 줄 사람이 아무도 없을 것이다. 그들뿐만 아니라 그들의 아내들과 아들딸들도 그와 같이 될 것이니, 이것은 내가 그들 위에 재앙을 퍼부을 것이기 때문이다."

16And the people they are prophesying to will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and sword. There will be no one to bury them or their wives, their sons or their daughters. I will pour out on them the calamity they deserve.

17"너는 이제 그들에게 이렇게 전하여라. '내 눈에서 밤낮, 하염없이 눈물이 흘러 내릴 것이다. 처녀 딸, 내 사랑스러운 백성이, 참혹하게 얻어맞아 죽을 지경에 이르렀기 때문이다.

17"Speak this word to them: " 'Let my eyes overflow with tears night and day without ceasing; for my virgin daughter-my people-has suffered a grievous wound, a crushing blow.

18들녘으로 나가 보면, 거기에는 칼에 찔려 죽은 사람들이 있고, 도성으로 들어가 보면, 거기에는 기근으로 고통받는 사람들뿐이다. 그렇다. 예언자도 제사장도 어찌할 바를 모르는 채로 온 나라를 헤맬 뿐이다.'"

18If I go into the country, I see those slain by the sword; if I go into the city, I see the ravages of famine. Both prophet and priest have gone to a land they know not.' "

19"주님은 유다를 완전히 내버리셨습니까? 아니면 주님께서 진정으로 시온을 미워하십니까? 어찌하여 주님께서는, 우리가 낫지도 못하게 이렇게 심하게 치셨습니까? 우리가 기다린 것은 평화였습니다. 그런데 좋은 일이라고는 하나도 없습니다. 우리는 이 상처가 낫기만을 기다렸는데, 오히려 무서운 일만 당하고 있습니다.

19Have you rejected Judah completely? Do you despise Zion? Why have you afflicted us so that we cannot be healed? We hoped for peace but no good has come, for a time of healing but there is only terror.

20주님, 우리는 우리의 사악함과 우리 조상의 죄악을 인정합니다. 우리는 주님께 죄를 지었습니다.

20O LORD, we acknowledge our wickedness and the guilt of our fathers; we have indeed sinned against you.

21그러나 주님의 이름을 생각하셔서라도 우리를 박대하지 마시고, 주님의 영광스러운 보좌가 욕되지 않게 하여 주십시오. 주님께서 우리와 맺은 언약을 기억하시고, 그 언약을 깨뜨리지 말아 주십시오.

21For the sake of your name do not despise us; do not dishonor your glorious throne. Remember your covenant with us and do not break it.

22이방 사람이 섬기는 허황된 우상들 가운데 비를 내리는 신들이 있습니까? 하늘인들 스스로 소나기를 내려 줄 수가 있습니까? 주 우리의 하나님, 그런 분은 바로 주님이 아니십니까? 그러므로 우리는 오직 주님께만 희망을 걸고 있습니다. 주님께서 이 모든 것을 지으셨기 때문입니다."

22Do any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain? Do the skies themselves send down showers? No, it is you, O LORD our God. Therefore our hope is in you, for you are the one who does all this.
