1벨사살이 바빌론 왕이 된 첫 해에, 다니엘은 잠자리에서 꿈을 꾸면서, 머리 속으로 환상을 보고, 그 꿈을 적었다. 그가 적은 내용의 줄거리는 다음과 같다.

1In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and visions passed through his mind as he was lying on his bed. He wrote down the substance of his dream.

2다음은 다니엘이 한 말이다.내가 밤에 환상을 보았는데, 동서남북 사방에서, 하늘로부터 바람이 큰 바다에 불어 닥쳤다.

2Daniel said: 'In my vision at night I looked, and there before me were the four winds of heaven churning up the great sea.

3그러자 바다에서 모양이 서로 다르게 생긴 큰 짐승 네 마리가 올라왔다.

3Four great beasts, each different from the others, came up out of the sea.

4첫째 짐승은 사자와 같이 보였으나, 독수리의 날개를 가지고 있었다. 내가 살펴보고 있는 동안에, 그 날개들이 뽑혔다. 그 짐승은 몸을 일으키더니, 사람처럼 발을 땅에 디디고 섰는데, 사람의 마음까지 지니고 있었다.

4'The first was like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle. I watched until its wings were torn off and it was lifted from the ground so that it stood on two feet like a man, and the heart of a man was given to it.

5또 살펴보니, 다른 짐승 곧 둘째 짐승은 곰과 같았는데, 뒷발로 서 있었다. 그 짐승은 갈빗대 세 개를 물고 있었는데, 누군가가 그에게 이렇게 말하였다. '일어나서 고기를 많이 먹어라.'

5"And there before me was a second beast, which looked like a bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, 'Get up and eat your fill of flesh!'

6그 뒤에 내가 또 살펴보고 있는데, 또 다른 짐승이 나왔다. 그것은 표범처럼 생겼으나, 등에는 새의 날개가 네 개나 있었고, 머리도 네 개나 달려 있었으며, 아주 권위가 있어 보였다.

6'After that, I looked, and there before me was another beast, one that looked like a leopard. And on its back it had four wings like those of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority to rule.

7그 뒤에 내가 밤의 환상을 계속 살펴보고 있는데, 넷째 짐승이 나왔다. 그것은 사납고 무섭게 생겼으며, 힘이 아주 세었다. 이 짐승은 쇠로 된 큰 이빨을 가지고 있어서, 그것으로 먹이를 잡아 먹고, 으스러뜨리며, 먹고 남은 것은 발로 짓밟아 버렸다. 이 짐승은 앞에서 말한 짐승들과는 달리, 뿔을 열 개나 달고 있었다.

7'After that, in my vision at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast-terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.

8내가 그 뿔을 유심히 살펴보고 있자니, 다른 작은 뿔 하나가 그 뿔들 사이에서 돋아났다. 먼저 나온 뿔 가운데서 셋이 새로 돋아난 그 뿔에 밀려서 뿌리째 뽑혔다. 새로 돋아난 뿔은 사람의 눈과 같은 눈을 가지고 있었고, 입이 있어서 거만하게 떠들었다.

8'While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth that spoke boastfully.

9내가 바라보니, 옥좌들이 놓이고, 한 옥좌에 옛적부터 계신 분이 앉으셨는데, 옷은 눈과 같이 희고, 머리카락은 양 털과 같이 깨끗하였다. 옥좌에서는 불꽃이 일고, 옥좌의 바퀴에서는 불길이 치솟았으며,

9'As I looked, 'thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze.

10불길이 강물처럼 그에게서 흘러 나왔다. 수종 드는 사람이 수천이요, 모시고 서 있는 사람이 수만이었다. 심판이 시작되는데, 책들이 펴져 있었다.

10A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the books were opened.

11내가 보고 있는 동안에, 작은 뿔이 크게 떠드는 소리를 들을 수 있었다. 내가 살펴보니, 넷째 짐승이 살해되고, 그 시체가 뭉그러져서, 타는 불에 던져졌다.

11'Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking. I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire.

12그리고 그 나머지 짐승들은 그들의 권세를 빼앗겼으나, 그 생명은 얼마 동안 연장되었다.

12(The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.)

13내가 밤에 이러한 환상을 보고 있을 때에 인자 같은 이가 오는데, 하늘 구름을 타고 와서, 옛적부터 계신 분에게로 나아가, 그 앞에 섰다.

13'In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.

14옛부터 계신 분이 그에게 권세와 영광과 나라를 주셔서, 민족과 언어가 다른 뭇 백성이 그를 경배하게 하셨다. 그 권세는 영원한 권세여서, 옮겨 가지 않을 것이며, 그 나라가 멸망하지 않을 것이다.

14He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

15"나 다니엘은 마음 속이 괴롭고, 머리의 환상들이 나를 번민하게 해서,

15'I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me.

16거기에 서 있는 천사들 가운데 하나에게 가까이 가서, 이 모든 일을 두고 참 뜻을 물었다. 그가 나에게 설명하면서, 그 일을 풀이하여 알려 주었다.

16I approached one of those standing there and asked him the true meaning of all this. 'So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things:

17'이 큰 짐승 네 마리는 앞으로 땅에서 일어날 네 왕이다.

17'The four great beasts are four kingdoms that will rise from the earth.

18그러나 가장 높으신 분의 성도들이 나라를 얻을 것이며, 영원히 영원히 영원히 그것을 누릴 것이다.'

18But the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess it forever-yes, for ever and ever.'

19그 때에 나는 넷째 짐승의 참 뜻을 더 알고 싶었다. 이 짐승은 다른 모든 짐승과 달랐으며, 매우 사납고, 쇠 이빨과 놋쇠 발톱으로 먹이를 잡아먹고, 으스러뜨리고, 그 나머지 짐승들을 발로 짓밟아 버렸다.

19'Then I wanted to know the true meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others and most terrifying, with its iron teeth and bronze claws-the beast that crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left.

20나는 또 그 짐승의 머리에 있던 열 뿔과, 새로 돋아난 다른 뿔 하나도 알고 싶었다. 그 다른 뿔 앞에서 세 뿔이 빠졌다. 그 뿔에는 눈들이 있고, 크게 떠드는 입이 있었으며, 그 모습이 다른 뿔들보다 강하게 보였다.

20I also wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and about the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell-the horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully.

21내가 보고 있을 때에, 새로 돋은 그 뿔이 성도들에 맞서서 전쟁을 일으키고, 그들을 이겼으나,

21As I watched, this horn was waging war against the saints and defeating them,

22옛적부터 계신 분이 오셔서, 가장 높으신 분의 성도들의 권리를 찾아 주셔서, 마침내 성도들이 나라를 되찾았다.

22until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the saints of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom.

23그 천사가 이렇게 말하였다. '넷째 짐승은 땅 위에 일어날 넷째 나라로서, 다른 모든 나라와 다르고, 온 땅을 삼키며 짓밟고 으스러뜨릴 것이다.

23"He gave me this explanation: 'The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it.

24그 열 뿔은 이 나라에서 일어날 열 왕이다. 그 뒤에 또 다른 왕이 일어날 것인데, 그 왕은 먼저 있던 왕들과 다르고, 또 전에 있던 세 왕을 굴복시킬 것이다.

24The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings.

25그가 가장 높으신 분께 대항하여 말하며, 가장 높으신 분의 성도들을 괴롭히며, 정해진 때와 법을 바꾸려고 할 것이다. 성도들은 한 때와 두 때와 반 때까지 그의 권세 아래에 놓일 것이다.

25He will speak against the Most High and oppress his saints and try to change the set times and the laws. The saints will be handed over to him for a time, times and half a time.

26그러나 심판이 내려서, 그는 권세를 빼앗기고, 멸망하여 없어질 것이다.

26" 'But the court will sit, and his power will be taken away and completely destroyed forever.

27나라와 권세와 온 천하 열국의 위력이 가장 높으신 분의 거룩한 백성에게로 돌아갈 것이다. 그의 나라는 영원한 나라다. 권세를 가진 모든 통치자가 그를 섬기며 복종할 것이다.'

27Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be handed over to the saints, the people of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.'

28이것이 그 환상의 끝이다. 나 다니엘은 이 생각 때문에 고민하여, 얼굴색이 변하였지만, 이 일을 마음에 간직하였다."

28'This is the end of the matter. I, Daniel, was deeply troubled by my thoughts, and my face turned pale, but I kept the matter to myself.'
