1베스도가 부임한 지 사흘 뒤에, 가이사랴에서 예루살렘으로 올라가니,

1Three days after arriving in the province, Festus went up from Caesarea to Jerusalem,

2대제사장들과 유대 사람의 지도자들이 그에게 바울을 고발하였다. 그들은 그에게 줄곧 졸랐다.

2where the chief priests and Jewish leaders appeared before him and presented the charges against Paul.

3그들은 그에게 제발 바울을 예루살렘으로 불러 올리라고 간청하였다. 그들은 길에 사람을 매복시켰다가, 바울을 죽일 계획이었다.

3They urgently requested Festus, as a favor to them, to have Paul transferred to Jerusalem, for they were preparing an ambush to kill him along the way.

4그러나 베스도는, 바울이 가이사랴에 무사하게 감금되어 있다는 말과 자기도 곧 그리로 가겠다는 말을 한 다음에,

4Festus answered, 'Paul is being held at Caesarea, and I myself am going there soon.

5"그러니 만일 그 사람에게 무슨 잘못이 있거든, 여러분 가운데서 유력한 사람들이 나와 함께 내려가서, 그를 고발하시오" 하고 말하였다.

5Let some of your leaders come with me and press charges against the man there, if he has done anything wrong.'

6베스도는 예루살렘에서 여드레인가 열흘인가를 지낸 뒤에, 가이사랴로 내려가서, 이튿날 재판석에 앉아서, 바울을 데려오라고 명령하였다.

6After spending eight or ten days with them, he went down to Caesarea, and the next day he convened the court and ordered that Paul be brought before him.

7바울이 나타나자, 예루살렘에서 내려온 유대 사람들이 그를 에워싸고, 여러 가지 무거운 죄목을 걸어서 고발하였으나, 증거를 대지 못하였다.

7When Paul appeared, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many serious charges against him, which they could not prove.

8바울은 "나는 유대 사람의 율법이나 성전이나 황제에 대하여 아무 죄도 지은 일이 없습니다" 하고 말하여 자신을 변호하였다.

8Then Paul made his defense: 'I have done nothing wrong against the law of the Jews or against the temple or against Caesar.'

9그러나 베스도는 유대 사람의 환심을 사고자 하여, 바울에게 묻기를 "그대는 예루살렘으로 올라가서, 이 사건에 대하여 내 앞에서 재판을 받고 싶지 않소?" 하였다.

9Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor, said to Paul, 'Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem and stand trial before me there on these charges?'

10바울이 대답하였다. "나는 지금 황제의 법정에 서 있습니다. 나는 여기서 재판을 받아야 합니다. 각하께서도 잘 아시는 대로, 나는 유대 사람에게 조금도 잘못한 것이 없습니다.

10Paul answered: "I am now standing before Caesar's court, where I ought to be tried. I have not done any wrong to the Jews, as you yourself know very well.

11만일 내가 나쁜 짓을 저질러서, 사형을 받을 만한 무슨 일을 하였으면, 죽는 것을 마다하지 않겠습니다. 그러나 나를 고발하는 이 사람들의 고발 내용에 아무런 근거가 없으면, 어느 누구도 나를 그들에게 넘겨줄 수 없습니다. 나는 황제에게 상소합니다."

11If, however, I am guilty of doing anything deserving death, I do not refuse to die. But if the charges brought against me by these Jews are not true, no one has the right to hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar!'

12그 때에 베스도가 배심원들과 협의하고 "그대가 황제에게 상소하였으니, 황제에게로 갈 것이오" 하고 말하였다.

12After Festus had conferred with his council, he declared: 'You have appealed to Caesar. To Caesar you will go!'

13며칠이 지난 뒤에, 아그립바 왕과 버니게가 베스도에게 인사하려고 가이사랴에 왔다.

13A few days later King Agrippa and Bernice arrived at Caesarea to pay their respects to Festus.

14그들이 거기서 여러 날 지내는 동안에, 베스도는 바울에 대한 고발 사건을 왕 앞에 내놓고 말하였다. "벨릭스가 가두어 둔 사람이 하나 있는데,

14Since they were spending many days there, Festus discussed Paul's case with the king. He said: "There is a man here whom Felix left as a prisoner.

15내가 예루살렘에 갔을 때에, 유대 사람의 대제사장들과 장로들이 그를 고발하여, 유죄판결을 청하였습니다.

15When I went to Jerusalem, the chief priests and elders of the Jews brought charges against him and asked that he be condemned.

16나는 그들에게 대답하기를, 로마 사람의 관례로서는, 피고가 원고를 직접 대면해서, 그 고발한 내용에 대하여 변호할 기회를 가지기 전에는, 그 사람을 넘겨 주는 일이 없다고 하였습니다.

16'I told them that it is not the Roman custom to hand over any man before he has faced his accusers and has had an opportunity to defend himself against their charges.

17그래서 그들이 여기에 함께 왔으므로, 나는 조금도 지체하지 않고, 그 다음날 재판석에 앉아서, 그 사람을 불러오게 하였습니다.

17When they came here with me, I did not delay the case, but convened the court the next day and ordered the man to be brought in.

18원고들이 일어나서 그를 고발할 죄목을 늘어놓았지만, 내가 짐작한 그런 악한 일은 하나도 없었습니다.

18When his accusers got up to speak, they did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected.

19그들이 그와 맞서서 싸우는 몇몇 문제점은, 자기네의 종교와 또 예수라는 어떤 죽은 이에 관한 일인데, 바울은 그가 살아 있다고 주장하였습니다.

19Instead, they had some points of dispute with him about their own religion and about a dead man named Jesus who Paul claimed was alive.

20나는 이 문제를 어떻게 심리해야 할지 몰라서, 바울에게, 예루살렘으로 가서 이 사건으로 거기서 재판을 받기를 원하는지를 물어보았습니다.

20I was at a loss how to investigate such matters; so I asked if he would be willing to go to Jerusalem and stand trial there on these charges.

21그러나 바울이 황제의 판결을 받도록, 그대로 갇혀 있게 하여 달라고 호소하므로, 내가 그를 황제에게 보낼 때까지 그를 가두어 두라고 명령하였습니다."

21When Paul made his appeal to be held over for the Emperor's decision, I ordered him held until I could send him to Caesar."

22아그립바가 베스도에게 말하기를 "나도 그 사람의 말을 직접 들어보고 싶습니다" 하니, 베스도가 "내일, 그의 말을 들어보십시오" 하고 대답하였다.

22Then Agrippa said to Festus, 'I would like to hear this man myself.' He replied, 'Tomorrow you will hear him.'

23이튿날, 아그립바와 버니게가 위엄을 갖추고 나와서, 고급 장교들과 그 도시의 요인들과 함께 신문 장소로 들어갔다. 그리고 베스도의 명령으로 바울을 끌어냈다.

23The next day Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp and entered the audience room with the high ranking officers and the leading men of the city. At the command of Festus, Paul was brought in.

24그 때에 베스도가 말하였다. "아그립바 임금님, 그리고 우리와 자리를 같이 하신 여러분, 여러분이 보시는 대로, 이 사람은 예루살렘에서나 여기서나, 모든 유대 사람이 그를 이 이상 더 살려 두어서는 안 된다고 소리치면서, 나에게 청원한 사람입니다.

24Festus said: 'King Agrippa, and all who are present with us, you see this man! The whole Jewish community has petitioned me about him in Jerusalem and here in Caesarea, shouting that he ought not to live any longer.

25그러나 나는, 그가 사형을 받을 만한 아무런 일도 하지 않았다고 판단하였습니다. 그런데 그는 스스로 황제께 상소하였으므로, 나는 그를 보내기로 작정하였습니다.

25I found he had done nothing deserving of death, but because he made his appeal to the Emperor I decided to send him to Rome.

26나는 그와 관계되어 있는 일을 황제께 써 올릴 만한 확실한 자료가 없으므로, 여기서 그를 신문해서, 내가 써 올릴 자료를 얻을까 하는 생각으로, 그를 여러분 앞에, 특히 아그립바 임금님 앞에 끌어다가 세웠습니다.

26But I have nothing definite to write to His Majesty about him. Therefore I have brought him before all of you, and especially before you, King Agrippa, so that as a result of this investigation I may have something to write.

27죄수를 보내면서 그의 죄목도 제시하지 않는다는 것은, 이치에 맞지 않는 일이라고 생각합니다."

27For I think it is unreasonable to send on a prisoner without specifying the charges against him.
