1새벽에 곧 대제사장들이 장로들과 율법학자들과 더불어 회의를 열었는데 그것은 전체 의회였다. 그들은 예수를 결박하고 끌고 가서, 빌라도에게 넘겨주었다.

1Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.

2그래서 빌라도가 예수께 물었다. "당신이 유대인의 왕이오?" 그러자 예수께서 빌라도에게 대답하셨다. "당신이 그렇게 말하였소."

2'Are you the king of the Jews?' asked Pilate. 'Yes, it is as you say,' Jesus replied.

3대제사장들은 여러 가지로 예수를 고발하였다.

3The chief priests accused him of many things.

4빌라도는 다시 예수께 물었다. "당신은 아무 답변도 하지 않소? 사람들이 얼마나 여러 가지로 당신을 고발하는지 보시오."

4So again Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of."

5그러나 예수께서는 더 이상 아무 대답도 하지 않으셨다. 그래서 빌라도는 이상하게 여겼다.

5But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.

6그런데 빌라도는 명절 때마다 사람들이 요구하는 죄수 하나를 놓아 주곤 하였다.

6Now it was the custom at the Feast to release a prisoner whom the people requested.

7그런데 폭동 때에 살인을 한 폭도들과 함께 바라바라고 하는 사람이 갇혀 있었다.

7A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising.

8그래서 무리가 올라가서, 자기들에게 해주던 관례대로 해 달라고, 빌라도에게 청하였다.

8The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

9빌라도가 말하였다. "여러분은 내가 그 유대인의 왕을 여러분에게 놓아주기를 바라는 거요?"

9'Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?' asked Pilate,

10그는 대제사장들이 예수를 시기하여 넘겨주었음을 알았던 것이다.

10knowing it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.

11그러나 대제사장들은 무리를 선동하여, 차라리 바라바를 놓아 달라고 청하게 하였다.

11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.

12빌라도는 다시 그들에게 말하였다. "그러면, 당신들은 유대인의 왕이라고 하는 그 사람을 나더러 어떻게 하라는 거요?"

12'What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?' Pilate asked them.

13그들이 다시 소리를 질렀다. "십자가에 못박으시오!"

13'Crucify him!' they shouted.

14빌라도가 그들에게 말하였다. "정말 이 사람이 무슨 나쁜 일을 하였소?" 그들은 더욱 크게 소리를 질렀다. "십자가에 못박으시오!"

14'Why? What crime has he committed?' asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, 'Crucify him!'

15그리하여 빌라도는 무리를 만족시켜 주려고, 바라바는 놓아주고, 예수는 채찍질한 다음에 십자가에 처형당하게 넘겨주었다.

15Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

16병사들이 예수를 뜰 안으로 끌고 갔다. 그 곳은 총독 공관이었다. 그들은 온 부대를 집합시켰다.

16The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers.

17그런 다음에 그들은 예수께 자색 옷을 입히고, 가시관을 엮어서 머리에 씌운 뒤에,

17They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him.

18"유대인의 왕 만세!" 하면서, 저마다 인사하였다.

18And they began to call out to him, 'Hail, king of the Jews!'

19또 갈대로 예수의 머리를 치고, 침을 뱉고, 무릎을 꿇어서 그에게 경배하였다.

19Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him.

20이렇게 예수를 희롱한 다음에, 그들은 자색 옷을 벗기고, 그의 옷을 도로 입혔다. 그런 다음에, 그들은 예수를 십자가에 못박으려고 끌고 나갔다.

20And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

21그런데 어떤 사람이 시골에서 오는 길에, 그 곳을 지나가고 있었다. 그는 알렉산더와 루포의 아버지로서, 구레네 사람 시몬이었다. 그들은 그에게 강제로 예수의 십자가를 지고 가게 하였다.

21A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.

22그들은 예수를 골고다라는 곳으로 데리고 갔다. (골고다는 번역하면 '해골 곳'이다.)

22They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull).

23그들은 몰약을 탄 포도주를 예수께 드렸다. 그러나 예수께서는 받지 않으셨다.

23Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.

24그들은 예수를 십자가에 못박고, 예수의 옷을 나누어 가졌는데, 제비를 뽑아서, 누가 무엇을 차지할지를 결정하였다.

24And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.

25예수를 십자가에 못박은 때는, 아침 아홉 시였다.

25It was the third hour when they crucified him.

26그의 죄패에는 '유대인의 왕'이라고 적혀 있었다.

26The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.

27그들은 예수와 함께 강도 두 사람을 십자가에 못박았는데, 하나는 그의 오른쪽에, 하나는 그의 왼쪽에 달았다. (28절 없음)

27They crucified two robbers with him, one on his right and one on his left.

29지나가는 사람들이 머리를 흔들면서, 예수를 모욕하며 말하였다. "아하! 성전을 허물고 사흘만에 짓겠다던 사람아,

29Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, 'So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,

30자기나 구원하여 십자가에서 내려오려무나!"

30come down from the cross and save yourself!'

31대제사장들도 율법학자들과 함께 그렇게 조롱하면서 말하였다. "그가, 남은 구원하였으나, 자기는 구원하지 못하는구나!

31In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself!

32이스라엘의 왕 그리스도는 지금 십자가에서 내려와 봐라. 그래서 우리로 하여금 보고 믿게 하여라!" 예수와 함께 십자가에 달린 두 사람도 그를 욕하였다.

32Let this Christ, this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.' Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

33낮 열두 시가 되었을 때에, 어둠이 온 땅을 덮어서, 오후 세 시까지 계속되었다.

33At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.

34세 시에 예수께서 큰소리로 부르짖으셨다. "엘로이 엘로이 레마 사박다니?" 그것은 번역하면 "나의 하나님, 나의 하나님, 어찌하여 나를 버리셨습니까?" 하는 뜻이다.

34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?'-which means, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'

35거기에 서 있는 사람들 가운데서 몇이, 이 말을 듣고서 말하였다. "보시오, 그가 엘리야를 부르고 있소."

35When some of those standing near heard this, they said, "Listen, he's calling Elijah."

36어떤 사람이 달려가서, 해면을 신 포도주에 푹 적셔서 갈대에 꿰어, 그에게 마시게 하며 말하였다. "어디 엘리야가 와서, 그를 내려 주나 두고 봅시다."

36One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down," he said.

37예수께서는 큰 소리를 지르시고서 숨지셨다.

37With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.

38(그 때에 성전 휘장이 위에서 아래까지 두 폭으로 찢어졌다.)

38The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

39예수를 마주 보고 서 있는 백부장이, 예수께서 이와 같이 숨을 거두시는 것을 보고서 말하였다. "참으로 이분은 하나님의 아들이셨다."

39And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, 'Surely this man was the Son of God!'

40여자들도 멀찍이서 지켜 보고 있었는데, 그들 가운데는 막달라 출신 마리아도 있고 작은 야고보와 요세의 어머니 마리아도 있고 살로메도 있었다.

40Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.

41이들은 예수가 갈릴리에 계실 때에, 예수를 따라다니며 섬기던 여자들이었다. 그 밖에도 예수와 함께 예루살렘에 올라온 여자들이 많이 있었다.

41In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.

42이미 날이 저물었는데, 그 날은 준비일, 곧 안식일 전날이었다. 아리마대 사람인 요셉이 왔다.

42It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached,

43그는 명망 있는 의회 의원이고, 하나님의 나라를 기다리는 사람인데, 이 사람이 대담하게 빌라도에게 가서, 예수의 시신을 내어 달라고 청하였다.

43Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.

44빌라도는 예수가 벌써 죽었을까 하고 의아하게 생각하여, 백부장을 불러서, 예수가 죽은 지 오래되었는지를 물어 보았다.

44Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died.

45빌라도는 백부장에게 알아보고 나서, 시신을 요셉에게 내어주었다.

45When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph.

46요셉은 삼베를 사 가지고 와서, 예수의 시신을 내려다가 그 삼베로 싸서, 바위를 깎아서 만든 무덤에 그를 모시고, 무덤 어귀에 돌을 굴려 막아 놓았다.

46So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

47막달라 마리아와 요세의 어머니 마리아는, 어디에 예수의 시신이 안장되는지를 지켜 보고 있었다.

47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
